Ich gestehe ja jedem seine Meinung zu, hier hab ich aber den Eindruck, dass der Schreiber die Scheibe bloss benutzt um seine Abneigung gegen traditionellen Prog-Metal zum Ausdruck zu bringen. Und das ist natürlich schade, weil erstens gerade dieses Album das absolut nicht verdient hat und zweitens dprp.net eigentlich eine renommierte Seite mit engagierten Schreibern und (grösstenteils) guten und lesenswerten Reviews ist. Naja, vielleicht schieben die ja noch ein RTR (Round Table Review) mit drei anderen Leuten nach.

So here's the story: I was casually surfing the web, when I decided I needed a quick dose of new prog. Luckily, I work for a website where I can easily download some of the latest progressive albums for free on the condition that I write a review. Doesn't seem like a bad trade, eh? Naturally, I wanted to listen to a really good album, so I decided to see what new albums are popular, and, in this case, March Of Progress came to me. I'd never heard of Threshold before, nor did I know that this was their ninth studio album, or that their singer Andrew McDermott died last year of kidney failure. After an event that would be tragic for any band, Threshold have done the brave thing and continued on with a new singer, Damian Wilson. While I may respect Threshold in this sense, this certainly doesn't change how I feel about the music.

It took me approximately 90 seconds to realise I wasn't going to like this album. Progressive metal has become a very monotonous genre indeed, with Dream Theater/Symphony X clones running amok without really adding anything new or interesting to the table. In this world, technical skill is the minimum requirement; what's lacking is proper emotion. The exception to the rule was Haken, whose album Aquarius really makes me believe that there could be another chance for prog metal to redeem itself. However, no such thing could be said about March Of Progress.

Each song on this album is so stale that I can hardly stand to listen to it in full. This is especially a problem when the average song length is about seven minutes. Boring verses and lacklustre choruses give way to uninspiring solo segments in a constant cycle of mediocrity. Wilson may be able to hold a note, but his voice gets rather tiresome after a few tracks. Moreover, the songs are so utterly predictable that you've pretty much worked out how it's going to go after the first chorus. What we end up with is pretty weak metal, and a lack of anything truly progressive apart from the deceptively long track lengths

Since joining DPRP, I've not reviewed much progressive metal, since the majority of bands that claim to live under this umbrella like to write slightly longer and marginally more complex songs than your average metal band, but simply fail to grasp what it means to be progressive. It's bands like Soniq Circus and Threshold that make me wash my hands of the genre, although Haken and Dream Theater do have a way of luring me back. If you're mindlessly in love with the so-called 'progressive metal sound' then this may do something for you, but since there's nothing original here, I'd advise you to stay away. Progressive metal band? More like progressive metal bland!

Naja, der sagt ja schon selber, dass er keinen Prog hört. Warum er sich dann aber erdreistet, dennoch ein mit subjektiven Eindrücken vollgestompftes Review zu schreiben dem jegliche Objektivität abgeht, das erschließt sich mir nicht. Ich schreibe auch keine MANOWAR Reviews, eben weil ich nicht kompetent in Bezug auf die Musik bin (vom nässenden, juckenden MANOWAR-Ausschlag mal ganz abgesehen). Hab noch von niemandem der THRESHOLD mag ein schlechtes Review gelesen, und das sagt eigentlich alles Wäre natürlich trotzdem schön, wenn die Scheibe auch Neuhörer gewinnt...

Er sagt, dass er seit langem keinen Prog-METAL mehr hört weil die einschlägigen Acts nicht progressive genug sind. Aber auch das zeugt von mangelnder Umsicht, denn bei dem was alles unter dem Label "Prog"-wasauchimmer erscheint sind jeden Monat ein paar Sachen dabei, die nicht wie DREAM THEATER/SYMPHONY X-Klone klingen.

Vielleicht fand er es auch einfach nur "fancy" entgegen der ganzen Lobeshymnen einen (schlechten) Verriss zu schreiben? Wenn eine Band nur aufgrund mangelnder innovativer Momente 3/10 Punkte bekommt, hätten sich einige Genres beinahe abgeschafft. Was erwartet der denn, dass jede Band mit jedem neuen Album ein "Images & Words" (von der Strahlkraft her) veröffentlicht?

Davon abgesehen, gibt es keine Band, die wie THRESHOLD klingt. Das alleine reicht ja schon, um enorm eigenständig - und damit ja auch irgendwie progressiv - zu sein.

das muss natürlich nicht zwingend bedeuten, dass man es hier mit einem schlechten Album zu tun hat und auch nicht jedes Prog-album sprengt die Konventionen oder erfindet das Genre neu, aber mit der Einschätzung "etwas komplexerer (mal mehr; mal weniger), lascher Metal mit cleanem Gesang" liegt er imo nicht falsch, 3/10 ist dennoch übertrieben
sicherlich fehlt ihm (wie auch mir) die Bindung, Geschichte zur Band, um da tiefer eintauchen zu können

hier treffen zwei Extreme aufeinander... die einen könnens kaum erwarten das Review abzutippen und im Kopf bereits 10/10 best album 2012 *handsdown* versus "another so called prog album?! let's give it a try, 1st track: pfff... prog is dead"
