Gruppe 2:

A DAY TO REMEMBER sagt mir nix. Dieser Akustik-Klampfen-Emo sagt mir aber natürlich zu. Dafür wäre ich 2006 empfänglich gewesen, und ich bin es fast 20 Jahre später immer noch. Auch verstärkt im MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE Stil zum Ende hin geil.

Mit FALCONER kann man kaum was falsch machen. Alleine schon diese Gitarrenmelodien! Und dann die Traumstimme von Mathias Blad. Zudem einer der besten Songs der Truppe, zumindest nach dem Über-Debüt.

'Halo' ist ebenfalls phänomenal. Ganz starke Nummer von MACHINE HEAD. Überhaupt ist "The Blackening" ihr stärkstes Album.

METSATÖLL machen einen guten Job, doch, das taugt mir auch. Wann kommt jetzt mal was, was weiter runter kann in der Gruppe?

MONO mit einem sehr schönen Artwork. Das ist dann faszinierend gemachte Musik, aber holt mich in dem Setting nicht wirklich ab.

OMEGA LITHIUM. Naja, das hätte ich mir 2004 schon irgendwie angehört. Heute geht das fast nur noch mit engem persönlichen Bezug. Das Video ist stimmungsvoll gemacht.

PHARAOH ist natürlich der Wahnsinn. Dabei habe ich noch einen größeren Bezug zu den Alben von 2008 (und der danach, wann war das?). Auch wenn ich diesen Song noch nicht so überoft gehört habe, ist er wohl kaum vom Thron zu verstoßen.

RÖYKSOPP sagt mir mal wieder gar nix. Ja, das kann man schon ganz gut ertragen. Die Stimme zieht mich leider null.

UNLEASHED ist natürlich völlig problemlos erträglich. Das ist nämlich richtig gut. Schöner Stampf-Metal.

TOM WAITS ist schon sehr anstrengend. Freut mich, wenn Leute das mögen. Ich freu mich, wenn ich es nicht wieder hören muss.

Nee, nee. Wenn es nach mir ginge, müsste es in der ersten Runde Pflicht sein einen Ersteindruck zu gewinnen...natürlich mit den richtigen Ohren. Aber was weiß ich schon

So, es seht aus das es ist wieder eines Jahre das ich versuche ein Tom Waits Fan zu verden. Vielleicht dieses Mal schaffe ich es.

A DAY TO REMEMBER: Fine song with the big Avicii style outro which really defined the time.
I find the way he says “eventshually” really irritating
I originally thought the opening chords and melody we're played on the same guitar, and that it was very cool. So I was disappointed when I worked out they didn't do that. Lindsay Buckingham would have.

FALCONER: From the first 10 seconds I thought “oh, I'm going to enjoy the hell out this one” , and yes, correct. Solid meat-and-potatoes metal. Nice little things to enjoy like the bass fills. Will check out more of their stuff.

MACHINEHEAD - Hay-LOOOOO. Didn't really know the band till Graspop last year. Crowd surfed for the first time in well over a decade, and have listened to them a bit since, so this is in my current rotation (and was my nomination). Makes you want to get out of bed, drink some whisky, and punch a priest. Excellent. (Also I put no thought into the video not being the 9 minute proper version - I would have if I'd thought about it…)

METSATÖLL: Folk metal is such a delicate balance for me. Sometime I love it (one of my noms is folk metal with the full suite of ridiculous instruments) and sometimes I find it very silly… this is right on that line. Bass lines are great (maybe it's these headphones but I seem to be noticing the bass more than usual).

MONO: I've been listing to the list while working, at least 6 times. So I've spent a full hour listening to this song and I could not tell you much about it. Does it have vocals?! No idea. I just tune it out.
Ok I really concentrated this time Conceptually I like it, and I like the heavy part at the end, but it feels like it's missing something for a 10 minute song… like a painting with an amazing background and no subject. I guess they call that a “landscape”.

OMEGA LITHIUM: It's kinda like Lacuna Coil without the guy singer. And he is definitely not why people listen to lacuna coil. I like it. Good atmosphere. I like the little break near the end where they decide to just do a bit of military snare drum. Interesting choice, no complaints.
Haha, ok after listening to more Omega Lithium it seems like they do have a guy singer, just not in that song. And he's not as good. So exactly like Lacuna Coil

PHAROAH: From the galloping intro I was in to it. Feels like a band knows exactly what they're doing, to the point that it's almost too polished. That's my only criticism though, other while a solid song with all the right bits in the right places. Goes on a fun and interesting little journey. More cool bass.

RÖYKSOPP: Walmart brand kate bush I like Kate bush, and this a pretty great homage. Singer carries it and I read she's a guest vocalists so I'm interested in what the rest of the bands stuff is like without her. Feel like the start of the song is better than the end. Where's my big Avicii outro?! Instead it seems to forget what it was doing, try something else, and then quickly give up on it.

UNLEASHED: Yup. 4 seconds in and I'm convinced this is gonna be good. A lot to like in a sub 3 minute song. Growl vocals are always a bit of hard sell for me, but this is great. Duelling guitar solo is very cool.

TOM WAITS: As I said in an earlier comment, every couple of years I'll give Tom waits another spin, some of it is great and some I just do not get. The problem is it's impossible to tell which is which before listening to the album a bunch. And the bad stuff might be great with more listening… there is literally no way of knowing. This is weird, off kilter, and fantastic - the sort of stuff that keeps me coming back. Excellent nomination, thanks!

Insgesamt eine starke erste Gruppe. Ich mag alle Songs.

Amenra – Razoreater
Rauh, aber gut. Tolle Atmosphäre. Der Gesang ist etwas harsch, aber live wäre es wahrscheinlich super.

Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent
Lustiger Song. Die Arctic Monkeys mochte ich in den 00er-Jahren nicht besonders, aber seitdem gefallen sie mir immer besser.

Kaiser Chiefs – Ruby
Irgendwie habe ich diesen Song, der anscheinend ein großer Hit war, komplett verpasst. Dann hatte ich einen Hund namens Ruby, dann kam ich nicht mehr drum herum. Es ist ein netter Song, aber er spricht mich nicht so sehr an.

Kino – Loser’s Day Parade
Toller Song. Ich habe Kino noch nie zuvor gehört. Von Anfang bis Ende unterhaltsam.

Petra – Jekyll and Hide
Guter Song, trifft hart, hinterlässt aber keinen bleibenden Eindruck.

Rose Kemp – Wholeness Sounds
Wunderbar, gefällt mir wirklich.

Styx – These are the Times
Toller Song, schöne Variationen darin. Hält mein Interesse von Anfang bis Ende aufrecht. Ich sollte mir vielleicht mehr von Styx anhören?

Turbostaat – Harm Rochel
Ist ok. Keine starken Gefühle hier.

Warrior – Kill the Machine
Guter Song, wie Petra, leicht anzuhören, vielleicht leicht zu vergessen?

Wolf – Curse you Salem
Für mich der Höhepunkt von Wolf. Die früheren Sachen haben Spaß gemacht. Die späteren Sachen haben mich nicht überzeugt oder ich habe sie mir nicht angehört. Aber hier, brillant. Was für ein Song. Was für ein Album. Bestnoten.

Wieder einmal stehen die 00er für epische Songs mit einer Länge von mehr als 5 Minuten.

Da hätte ich mich wohl auch dazu geäußert… leider bekomm ich das nicht mit, da ich die Songs immer in eine Spotify Playlist reinhaue. Die YT Videos schau ich gar nicht. Ich müsst schreiben, wenn ein Video Pflicht ist.

Gruppe1: Es war mir durchaus bewusst, dass ich in diesem Jahrzehnt relativ wenig wirklich kennen werde, aber gleich in der ersten Gruppe sind mir nur 2,5 Interpreten/Songs überhaupt ein Begriff. Unfassbar, aber geil. Genau deshalb liebe ich dieses Spielchen. WARRIOR gewinnt letztendlich völlig verdient. Speziell das Debüt aus den 80ern ist Weltklasse und hat für immer einen vorderen Platz in meinem Herzen inne. Bei allen Nachfolgealben hat sich aber ein deutlicher Leistungsabfalll bemerkbar gemacht. Dieser Song ist jedoch grandios. PETRA holt Silber. Die Band kannte ich vorher gar nicht, hat mich aber direkt umgehauen. Sofort notiert, werde ich im Auge behalten. Auf Platz Drei landet WOLF. Etwas überraschend, da sie grundsätzllich für mich kein Bronzekandidat sind. Hat aber in dieser Gruppe gereicht. Danach laufen KAISERS CHIEF und STYX ein. Zwei Songs, die ich sicherlich nicht wegschalten würde, wenn sie laufen. Sind ok. Das gilt grundsätzlich auch für KINO und ROSE KEMP, doch hier haben mich Länge bzw. die Atmosphäre irgendwie nicht so richtig abholen können. Auf den hinteren Plätzen landen ARCITC MONKEY, AMENRA und TURBOSTAAT, die mir von ihrer musikalischen Ausrichtung her am wenigsten geben.
